Class Reflection

January 26, 2010

Some “take-aways” that I took from political science this year was how to do things with passion and enthusiasium. Before I got to this class  I really knew nothing about politics. I never watched them, followed them, and never really cared. After having political science I now want to know whats going on in politics. I care what the President does, and the money that congress spends on what. Skills that I learned were how to look at sometihng deeper, and how to really get the true meaning of a topic.

Code Switching

January 19, 2010

Harry Reid made a comment to President Obama stating his “lack of negro dialect.” This was a comment that should not have been said and President Obama said him self that sometimes speaking to a primarily black crowd its hard not to code switch because of the atmosphere. He compared it an atmosphere that would be in an all black church. It was hard not to start speaking in “negro dialect” but its something that people frown upon all the time.  Reid encouraged Obama to run because he was a light-skinned black man and said that his negro dialect could help him, if he wanted to use it. This to me seems racist. Mr. Reid was clearly stating that if Obama spoke to black people in a way that would get them to vote for him, he would clearly have a leg up on any other competitors. Code switching to me isn’t something that I think is bad. I think people code switch all the time depending on who you’re talking to in order to ”fit in.”  Just because President Obama is black doesn’t mean that he isn’t going to have good proper english. Thats why I think Mr. Reid’s comment came off racist. “So for example, if you would look at Jesse Jackson in ’84 and ’88, he also spoke Standard English in his interviews, but Harry Reid – for the most part, but Harry Reid would likely say anyway that he spoke with a Negro dialect.” To me this also proves that Hayy Reid is somewhat racist because of his comments. They discussed if there should be anything further punishment fro Reid and I believe their should. The government is somewhat corrupt already and comments like this really tell that some people in congress and racist and are mad that the United States has a black president. Whether President Obama uses his “negro dialect,” or not he is still the President and it did not come easy for him.

New York Senate Votes Down Gay Marriage

The Gaggle

http://www.diigo.com/bookmark/http%3A%2F%2Fblog.newsweek.com%2Fblogs%2Fthegaggle%2Fdefault.aspx?gname=political-blogs

The Gaggle is a political blog that seems to follow Obama very frequently. It is “Newsweeks” blog that blogs about the articles in Newsweek. It is a conservative blog. Katie Connolly is a conservative author who is featured on the first page of the blog. Other frequent writers are also just as conservative as Connolly. MSNBC and The Washington Post are trusted sponsors of The Gaggle.

This article is about the gay rights movement and how the government keeps turning down the gay right law. Gay right supporters want Obama to that the movement more seriously. Politicians are saying that some gay rights supporters don’t think that the recent wins of Salt Lake City and Washington State don’t really matter, but journalists think otherwise. The National Government has not been tested with this subject, and thats what journalists are saying that they should do. The make up in congress is favorable for the gay rights supporters, in that members of congress showed friendly to gay rights with the recent passing of a law in October.

Terri Schiavo

November 2, 2009

From a legal standpoint I think that it was the right of Micheal Schiavo to have to desicion to pull Terri Schiavo’s feeding plug, if he thought it was nesscesary.
“In January of 2000, the Petition to Withdraw Life Support was heard by Judge George W. Greer in Pinellas-Pasco’s Sixth Judicial Circuit who found that Terri Schiavo would deny herself the provision of a gastric feeding tube in the event of a profound disability and ordered that her tube be removed.” This quote helps me understand that a judge made the decision that Terri Schiavo wanted to have her feeding tube removed. Although the judge did not know Terri he took time to think about what Micheal said about Terri telling him that if she were ever to be in the a vegittative state, that her plug be pulled. That to me is the altimate answer and solution. He is her husband, he by law, without her having a will, has the final desicion. I do have sympath for Terri’s family, but the final desicion relys with Micheal.

Passing the case on to the federal government was not only the wrong move, but it was illegal. Federalism, by defenition states that a system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and constituent political units. This means that the federal government cannot intervene with a state government court issue. Jeb Bush is at fault for even bringing this idea to the President, and so is congress for thinking that this was a legal move. “   There has obviously been no time even to detail for the federal court the specific constitutional and federal statutory claims the statute directs it to hear, let alone to conduct a trial.  The Senators and Representatives who crafted and voted to enact the Federal Terri’s Law repeatedly emphasized, during its consideration in Congress, that it would be inconceivable that a federal court, directed to conduct a new proceeding fully to determine Terri’s rights, would not re-insert the feeding tube for the duration of those proceedings.  The inconceivable has happened, and obviously should immediately be corrected by the appellate court.” http://www.nrlc.org/press_releases_new/JudgeWhittemoreClearlegalerror.html

This quote explains that the federal government has not even put in enough time or effort to understand the proximities of this case. I disagree with the President and congress’s desicion to act upon this case.

I do not think that the federal governemnt has any right to get involved with family affairs. The governments job to me, is to protect the people of the united states and over see things and make sure they go smoothly. There job is not to have opinion of things and then act on those opinions, when they effect other people. The people in the family have the authority to do whatever they want to their family member as long as it is not hurting them. This case is different. Terri specificially told Mike that if she were ever in this situation to pull the plug. Considering that she had no will her word is all she has. “Both Schiavo’s doctors and her court-appointed doctors expressed the opinion that there existed no hope of rehabilitation. Her husband, Michael Schiavo, stated that it was his wife’s wish that she not be kept alive through unnatural, mechanical means. Michael Schiavo wanted life support (her feeding tube) removed, after which Terri would slowly die of malnutrition and dehydration. By this time Michael had taken a new lover, but refused to divorce Terri, as doing so would have forfeited his right to determine her care.”

This quote explains that although Micheal Schiavo loved his wife very much there was no chance that she would survive. It was he decision and only his the government can not intervene in his choices.

“Will we leave this nation better off then we recieved it.” Samuel Rodriguez

I agree with this quote about the American Dream because this, to me is how the world should work. He also talks about being truthful, being true to the world and your self. I don’t think that the American Dream is unreachable but  it deffenitly will become harder to acheive as time goes on. I don’t think the president has anything to do the American Dream or being able to achieve it as a person. I don’t think that he helps or hurts citizens chances. The American Dream to me has not changed. Even though the economy has gone down my thoughts of the American Dream has not changed i think it is easily achieved with hard work and a mind set that you can do anything. I beleive that the American Dream is whatever and however you want it to be. i don’t think that there is any true “American Dream”, to me, it is what you make of it. “I’d like to see, because of the work I do, a country where everybody has health insurance coverage.” I disagree with this because universal healthcare coverage is something that will be paid for through taxes. I think that if you are responisible to live on your own, then you need to live on your own. Be responisble for your self, acheive the American Dream by urself. The American Dream to me is measured on your own hard work.

http://mercedes-benz-blog.blogspot.com/2009/10/spy-2011-mercedes-benz-cls-amg-new.html  This a Mercedes Benz blog. The blog is about all the new and upcoming cars from Mercedes.  I chose this blog because i really enjoy cars expecially mercedes. In this website Mercedes shows there new cars on the line coming out soon, and they hide the identity of one car and have someone drive it on the roads of the US. I like this idea because I think its cool that they produce a 2012  car and drive it on the street currently. I wish that was my job.

http://www.complex.com/SNEAKERS   This is a blog about sneakers. I chose it because i am really interested in shoes and i love buying new ones. On the blog is new shoes that will be coming to store soon. Some of the newer, styles of shoes are plain, but have more colors on them. I like this because that is the style that I am interested in.  Now a days shoes are getting more expensive and the styles are getting more and more simple, but I enjoy them. I wish I could have my own shoe website.
